I had really sore/bleeding/cracked nipples for the first 2-3 weeks and tried expressing some milk after each feed to let dry on my nipples but it didn't seem to help. My baby had a poor latch that took a long time to improve. Its funny thinking back on it but I spent many nursing sessions crying from the pain. Finally, I got a tube of Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula from the pharmacy and things seemed to get better. I don't know if it really did help or the baby's latch had improved by then but it did make me feel a lot better.

After the cracked/bleeding nipples healed I still felt a lot of pain when the baby first latched on. I dealt with that by counting from 1 to 10. The pain usually subsided by around 5 and each time I could look forward to number 5 instead of feeling like it would last forever :)

I have been feeding my baby now for 8 months and it has been extremely rewarding. I'm glad I stuck it out!

On a separate topic, I also found that when I pumped, I felt some sort of pain around the areola and the skin on my breast. Got around that by putting some Bepanthan on the suction part of the breastpump so it wouldn't stick so tightly to my skin.

I also had a lot of pain in the first month of BF...bleeding and excruciating pain each of my baby's initial suckles. I had to hold my breath or my husband had to hold me to tolerate the initial sucks. It does get better later...and I went to see a doctor for a nipple cream to apply (one that also deals with the infection as it was bleeding). I let the nipples air a lot and it helped. After 2 weeks, things were much better... it takes perserverance but the pain won't last forever..

I experienced similar problems. I had horrible cracks for about 2 months, that just woudn't heal by just letting them air out.
Finally I managed to get some pure lanoline (grease that comes from the sheep's hair). I covered my nipples with a thin film of it before every feed and after 2 weeks, the crack was gone.
I also found that after 2 months, I didn't experience any pain at all anymore. It's like your body is used to the breastfeeding.
It really takes a bit of perseverance but the rewards are worth it. I am still breastfeeding now, after 6 months.

hi,

can anyone tells me what to do with a nipple blister? It has been there for few months and gotten seasoned by repeated feeding. On days that I feel sore, the blister is getting bigger. Any treatment? thanks.
